Sang = Mulberry
Ji = Rely on
Sheng = Life
Sang Ji Sheng relies on the Mulberry tree for life. In other words, it's a parasite of the tree. From romantic to wretched. Simply semantics.
Anyway, it is also called "Asian Mistletoe."
Sang Ji Sheng is one of those herbs that look like a lot of others - like a bunch of small yard trimmings. But it does have a kind of orangish tinge in places, and is mostly purplish-green in other. It's kind of pretty.
Sang Ji Sheng is:
NOURISHING
NEUTRAL
TONIFYING
It goes to the Liver and Kidney and is bitter and sweet.
It is the second herb (I think there are only two) that calms a restless fetus. The other was Huang Qin.
Because it's a parasite, I imagine it wraps itself around Sang Zhi. I am going to use that fact to help me remember its functions.
By tonifying the Liver and Kidneys, it strengthens sinews and bones (expelling wind damp) in the low body. Perhaps by wrapping around Sang Zhi, Sang Ji Sheng is actually strengthening the sinews and bones of the tree.
It also nourishes the blood and calms a restless fetus. Perhaps Sang Ji Sheng is wrapping itself tightly around Sang Zhi singing it lullabies.
And it benefits dry, scaly skin. It is covering up the rough bark of Sang Zhi with its soft leaves!
