Long Dan Cao is one of the best herbs for draining Liver Fire, and it also drains damp heat (it is bitter and cold) from the LV and GB channels (Bensky writes "eliminates damp heat from the lower burner"). It looks kind of like spaghetti made out of cardboard. Because it is cold, it should not be used by those who have deficient cold of the spleen and stomach. This is an herb for excess.
Long Dan Cao is a root, which helps me to remember that it directs downward. Bensky writes that it is "sinking in nature." Primarily, it is used for cooling Liver / GB fire, and for damp-heat in the lower burner.
But because the LV/GB channels traverse both the upper and lower parts of the body, the herb is used for damp heat symptoms manifesting above in the GB channel (red, swollen, sore throat and eyes and ears / sudden deafness)
and below in the Liver channel (pain, swelling, dampness in the genital area and foul-smelling vaginal discharge and itching, and damp heat jaundice.)
In addition to the "Damp heat from the lower burner" function, Long Dan Cao also drains and pacifies Liver Fire (headache, red eyes, temper, insomnia, seizures) and symptoms from wind-heat invasion.
