Clear Heat / Cool Blood: Sheng Di Huang
Sheng Di Huang is the raw (sheng) foxglove root, but it doesn't look yellow (huang) even though it's supposed to look yellow inside. Because it goes to the Kidney (and the heart and liver) it is a yin nourisher, but this is a secondary function. Above nourishing the yin and generating fluids, it clears heat and cools the blood at the ying and xue levels, cooling the upward blazing of heart fire.
Sheng Di Huang goes to the Kidney, Heart and Liver:
So Sheng Di Huang is good for both excess and deficient heat, like Zhi Mu in the Clears Heat / Drains Fire category. It is both sweet and bitter.
As a heat clearer / blood cooler, it will alleviate ying and xue level heat with symptoms of a high fever, thirst, and a scarlet tongue. As a yin nourisher, it will generate fluids, help a dry mouth, continuous low grade fever, and constipation, as well typical yin deficient signs (five palm heat, nightsweats, yin deficient sore throat, etc.).
